Public health needs and issues for the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting will be managed by Palau’s Ministry of Health and Human Services (MHHS).

MHHS will strictly enforce the prevention and control of infectious diseases during the Pacific Islands Forum by monitoring the following syndromes and events:

1. Acute fever and rash
2. Influenza-like illness
3. Dengue-like illness
4. Prolonged fever
5. Diarrhea
6. Conjunctivitis
7. Other unusual and unexpected events

All participants should follow any screening requirements set by MHHS. Health checks will be implemented as needed to detect potential symptoms and control any outbreaks.

While the Government of Palau is working hard to ensure that your stay during the 55th PIFLM is healthy and safe, each delegation is equally responsible for protecting their health while in Palau. Please plan ahead and follow the advice below.

Vector-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya virus, Zika virus, and lymphatic filariasis are endemic in many Pacific island nations. Protect yourself by using insect repellent morning, day, and night, and using mosquito nets at night where practical.

Participants coming from countries with common vector-borne illnesses, including malaria, dengue, and leptospirosis, should ensure they take appropriate prophylaxis or prevention measures during their time in Palau. Countries with a history of recent outbreaks of viral illnesses such as measles and whooping cough must ensure health clearance for all members of the delegation.

Those with chronic medical conditions must ensure adequate supplies of personal prescribed medications are available and that complete medical assessments are done before travel.

Food-borne illnesses can be prevented by practicing proper hygiene.

The Republic of Palau has one government hospital and eight community health centers. Belau National Hospital is located in Meyuns, Koror. Five community health centers are located on the main islands of Koror and Babeldaob, while three are located on Peleliu, Kayangel, and Angaur. Three private clinics also offer medical services in Koror.

Belau National Hospital has been designated as the primary facility for trauma and emergency cases during the Pacific Islands Forum. Regular charges apply for medical services. The Emergency Room is open 24 hours and can be accessed by anyone requiring emergency services.
